One of my D&D characters. He's a warforged. The character concept is; he is one of several operations robots on an airship who don't really have autonomy or a soul or whatever. This particular bot got into an engine room accident that warped his facial plate, giving him the appearance of a little grin. After that the crew started treating him more like a person, dressing him up in little outfits and referring to him by name and that is what caused him to gain self awareness.
